There's no shade in Firefox 8. Stupid idea though.
Probably what you mean is technique called "Lightbox". Google for it
and learn.

I suggest you learn about this and other techniques by deconstructing
the page, primarily by reading the source code of the page. If you
don't know HTML and CSS, learn it! You can't develop web sites
effectively by not knowing about these. After a while you might want
to get into javascript as well.

There's 24bit and special 8bit pngs as well as CSS3 in use for this
sort of thing.
